ZUS: Increasing number of days on sick leave. 290.5 million days of absence in 2025
In 2025, the Social Insurance Institution (“ZUS”) recorded 27.5 million medical certificates of temporary incapacity for work, which meant 290.5 million days of sick leave. This is 500,000 days more than the previous year and 8 million more than in 2021, according to ZUS data.
Of the total number of days of absence, 242 million were because of illness of the ZUS-insured person. The average duration of sick leave was 11 days, and, statistically, one in two insured persons received a medical certificate.
The most common causes of incapacity for work were:
- musculoskeletal disorders (42.4 million days),
- mental and behavioural disorders (34.1 million days),
- respiratory diseases (32.9 million days).
